  • Leonard Cohen was the grandson of two well known Canadian rabbis[1]. His Lithuanian-born mother was the daughter of a Talmudic writer. His paternal grandfather, whose family had moved from Poland to Canada. His parents gave him the Jewish name Eliezer, which means ‘God is help’. The family observed Orthodox Judaism. “I had a very Messianic childhood. I was told I was a descendant of Aaron, the high priest.”
  • In Hebrew, the word hallelujah means to rejoice in praising
  • The song refers to the story of King David and Bathsheba. Bathsheba was King David’s most famous and controversial wife, in part because their marriage came after an illicit extramarital affair.
  • The Guilt of David: David sent his army out to war, but he himself stayed behind in Jerusalem. Obviously, David was secure enough on his throne that he no longer had a need to go to war to prove his military prowess[2]; he could send his generals instead. Thus King Davidwas relaxing on a palace balcony above the city when he spied a beautiful woman taking a bath. Through his messengers, David learned that she was Bathsheba, wife of Uriah the Hittite, who had gone to battle for David.

One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful,  and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. Then she went back home. The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”

David’s sin in their affair to be greater for two reasons. Once he found out Bathsheba’s identity, he knew that she was married and he had sent her husband off to war. Clearly, a liaison[3] with her would violate the seventh commandment against adultery, and a king of Israel was supposed to be a religious leader as well as a political leader.

Not long after Bathsheba and David committed adultery, Bathsheba sent a message to David telling him she was pregnant. Now the pressure was really on the king, who might have concealed[4] his affair with Bathsheba, but couldn’t hide her pregnancy for long. Instead of owning up[5] to the liaison and making restitution[6], David took an even more sinful approach to the crisis. He recalled Uriah from the front, supposedly to give him a report on the battle, and then told him to take some leave and visit his wife. But Uriah didn’t go home; he stayed within the palace barracks. David asked Uriah why he didn’t go home, and loyal Uriah replied that he wouldn’t dream of having a conjugal[7] visit when David’s army at the front has no such opportunity. Next, David invited Uriah for dinner and got him drunk, figuring that intoxication will arouse Uriah’s desire for Bathsheba. But David was foiled[8] again; drunk though he was, honorable Uriah returned to the barracks and not to his wife.

At this point David was desperate. In verse 15, David is described writing a letter to his general, Joab, telling him to put Uriah on the front lines where the fighting is fiercest, and then to withdraw, leaving Uriah undefended. David sent this letter to Joab by Uriah, who had no idea that he was carrying his own death sentence.

Sure enough, Joab put Uriah on the front lines and he was killed. After a mourning period, Bathsheba was brought to the palace to become the latest of King David’s wives, thus assuring the legitimacy of their child.

David thought he pulled off[9] this caper[10] until the prophet Nathan came to visit him. Nathan told the powerful king a tale of a poor shepherd whose lamb was stolen by a rich man. David flew into a rage, demanding to know who the man was so that he could exact judgment on him. Nathan calmly told the king: “You are the man,” meaning that God had revealed to the prophet the truth of David’s adultery, deceit[11], and murder of Uriah.

Even though David had committed sins worthy of execution, said Nathan, God instead exacted judgment upon David and Bathsheba’s newborn son, who subsequently died. David consoled Bathsheba by getting her pregnant again, this time with a son the named Solomon.

  • King David struggles with lusting over a woman. He kills her husband and thus does the dirty deed. Possibly this Hallelujah is a corrupted It’s about sacrifice and love. King David sacrificed his morals and his relation with God by killing a man to obtain love. The woman doesn’t realize how great David’s sacrifice was through breaking his relation with God by displeasing him. He is baffled by the dark love that came from his bloodshed. King David being stripped of his morals. It could also be possible that Cohen sings “she broke your throne, and cut your heir.” In the Bible Solomon (King David’s son) was hurt by his father’s actions.
  • It is a refrain worthy of times of celebration, of mourning, of regret, of catharsis, and reconciliation. It`s a story of broken love, remembered and mourned, guilt, penance, and of finding peace in the vicissitudes of brokenness.

corrupted, catharsis, vicissitudes, mourned, refrain, lust, outdrew, arch, overthrew, baffled, adultery, descendant, rejoice, praising, illicit

Lekcja #3 Mother – Pink Floyd (1979)

Lekcja #3 Mother – Pink Floyd (1979)

The Wall opowiada historię, zgorzkniałego i wyobcowanego gwiazdora rocka. Jak mówi piosenka „Mother”, część jego poczucia wyobcowania bierze się z wychowania przez nadopiekuńczą samotną matkę, która straciła męża, ojca naszego bohatera, podczas II wojny światowej.

  • “Mother” by Pink Floyd in their album “The Wall” (and the movie) is about the main character Pink’s difficulties in life due to his up bringing. His father died in WWII and he was raised by his mother who was very loving but sometimes overbearing and domineering. She protected him from everything and therefore built a “wall” of protection around him as a boy. He grew up without any male influence (reference: scene from the movie where he walks up to another father on a play-ground and holds his hand as to say “You’ll be my new father”–the man pushes him away). In a sense, Pink is a mommas-boy who is very dependent on her for life decisions and he has been stunted in his ability to face troubles in life. The song particularly relates how his mother attempts to shield him from sex. Other bricks are placed as a result of his repressive school, his failed marriage, the fame that comes with his grown up musical career, and so on. Throughout the album, it makes heavy references to a distrust of the government, schools (teachers, principals), the military-any big authoritarian organization.
  • So what i think, is that its making reference to books like 1984 by George Orwell. As they make it sound like mother is big brother . with the protective to the point where “she wont let you fly but she might let you sink” saying that the Gov. trys to help but in the end it does not. Also wit the singer asking mother what to do never fallowing his own free will. There is no more free will. Also it sounds like brave new world that we’v lost all personality and we all rely on what we think we know.
  • I always thought “Mother” was authority in general. Could be parent, government, religion, depression/ anxiety, whatever we allow to have power in our life. Pretty bleak song. We want to know what to expect and what to do in this life, but the source that offers answers usually also has the power. If we want a certain future, we must relinquish personal freedom and control. Seeking reassurance in a world of uncertainty is a losing game.
  • It’s about people in communist Soviet Russia and how they had to be dependent on what Mother Land Russia had to say: the bomb = American Nuclear threat; do you think they’ll like this song? = total control of free thinking; they’ll try to break my balls = Stalin’s torture camps and special police; the wall = Berlin Wall; should I run for President = common man’s governance; should I trust the government?= common man’s ignorance; will they put me in the firing line? = Compulsory Army drafting; Is it just a waste of time? = People losing hope on communism. It`s a personification of Soviet promise to take care of all her children. Of how ‘mother land’ is above individual needs. He wants to leave the motherland for USA in hope of better living. It also portrays how well propaganda conditioning for generations work, because he still has questions about what life will be after leaving the motherland. ‘She’ here is America. Mother Russia promise to keep her children safe from all evils of capitalism and strife. Life with ‘mother’ is far comfortable than the gauntlet of capitalism.

  • The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1983. Their music incorporates elements of alternative rock, funk, punk rock and psychedelic
  • The chorus was actually written by Flea, and the song’s based on an old gospel song “Jesus is my Aeroplane” that Flea listened to when he was younger:

Oh, Jesus is my air-o-plane
He holds this world in his hands
He rides along, He don’t never fall

He’s not religious in that sense any more, but he feels that music is his Aeroplane. it’s probably both about enjoying music and also drugs.

  • If you pay attention, Anthony struggled with his drug addiction around this time. And a lot of the time, he would have upbeat music, but put depressing lyrics in it. In my opinion, he was calling for help. There’s a lot to it too. Like “looking in my rearview mirror, I can make it disappear”, is pretty much about Hillel’s death. And Anthony did drugs in his kitchen. But the whole band was there too, that they were too gone to pay attention to Anthony’s call for help. It’s what I see. This song has so much to it, I could go on and on.
  • I believe this song is about drug addiction. During the relaease of ‘One Hot Minute’ Anthony Kiedis had slipped back into drugs as soon as he started making music again. He admitted it in numerous interviews, saying that replacing Hillel again made him depressed and he couldnt cope. Thats why he says he hated making One Hot Minute, because it brought up all his old pain about Hillel Slovak’s death.
  • I love the Velvet Underground reference. “Sour Jane”.
  • the dude who said flea’s daughter’s name ISNT Clara is a total moron. he said her name was claire. Claire is actually some chick anthony dated on and off during the “Californication” era.
  • wow nobody pointed out that Mazzy Star refrence? The song is obviously about how Music is his addiction and he makes a refrence to singer Mazzy Star and her song “Into Dust”

Still falling
Breathless and on again
Inside today
Beside me today
Around broken in two
‘Till you eyes shed
Into dust

  • This song arises from an over-used bed in the Penn Terminal Hotel in 1966. It’s a very sinister The room is too hot. The radiator wouldn’t stop hissing. The faucet wouldn’t stop its mythological drip into the destroying porcelain sink. I can’t open the windows. I am in the midst of a bitter quarrel with a blonde woman. The song is half-written in pencil but it protects us as we manoeuvre, each of us, for unconditional victory. I am in the wrong room. I was with the wrong woman as usual. But as your Eastern physicians, Eastern metaphysicians know, just as from the darkest mud blooms the whitest lotus, so from the brownest hotel room you occasionally get a good song.

  • About Leonard Cohen (interview in Warsaw): I grew up in Montreal,in Canada. It is a very wide and beautiful country. I come from a very curious city where there are many influences operating: European, French, English, Jewish, Ukranian, German, Polish, Hungarian. I can’t begin to name all of the influences that i grew up around. And always there was the symbol of the church. We were Jews. We had a very ambiguous feeling about the Church because we knew the History of the church and we knew the History of the Jews.It is a curious thing friends that i found myself at this moment in the country where the greatest destruction of the Jewry occured. I have no thoughts about it. I have feelings that cannot be spoken. It has nothing to do with you. It has nothing to do with me.It is some matter between our great grand-parents,your great grand-parents and my great grand-parents. I have no judgment. My song has no flag, my song has no party,my song has no border. It is for men of good will, everywhere. But let us forget these heavy matters for a moment and return to my dismal adolescence in Montreal.
