    1. This is a breakup song, with Baby Jane being the name of the singer’s romantic interest, who is also the addressee. And the way the situation reads is that she more or less dumped him or at least has moved into a ‘higher’ social class which he cannot follow. Or stated differently, it appears that she has attractive options to move on without him and has decided to do so. And the singer is heartbroken, even offended, as a result. But instead of asking her back or anything like that, he is rather taking it as a lesson learned. Indeed through such aforementioned actions on behalf of Baby Jane, he has come to realize that she has unfavorable characteristics which he was not aware of when their relationship began.  So in a way, he is actually glad that their romance has ended. And he is also optimistic that the next time he falls in love, it will be with his true soulmate. And this confidence is perhaps once again due to the fact that now, via his mistreatment at the hands of Baby Jane, he is wiser in terms of what to look out for in a partner.
    2. Baby Jane is a self-conscious gold-digging whore seducing and using the person from whom’s perspective Rod sings.

    Goodnight

[1] The fall of man, or the fall, is a term used in Christianity to describe the transition of the first man and woman from a state of innocent obedience to God to a state of guilty disobedience. The doctrine of the fall comes from a biblical interpretation of Genesis. At first, Adam and Eve lived with God in the Garden of Eden, but the serpent tempted them into eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, which God had forbidden. After doing so, they became ashamed of their nakedness and God expelled them from the Garden to prevent them from eating from the tree of life and becoming immortal.

Dead Can Dance: an inward musical trip

Music is essential, and we know that. It is the most powerful fashion of non-verbal art to express the ineffable. That is why music is so closely interwoven with religious practices and mysticism.

Still, not all music is similarly capable of inspiring deep and sincere spirituality. The music industry is on the one hand mostly about ‟entertainment” and brutally commercialized. On the other hand, certain examples of ‟spiritual” and ‟new age” music sometimes sound too superficial.

        Medievalism and Exoticism

In 1991 Dead Can Dance released an album that caught the attention of music reviewers by constructing an aural allegiance to the Middle Ages. Suitably called A Passage in Time, the album was described as imitating medieval chant, troubadour music and Latin hymns.

Dead Can Dance envision an idealized Middle Ages untouched by industrialization and other “modern” practices. Contemporary society is described by band member Lisa Gerrard as a “culture that just keeps churning out robots.” Malaise is the obvious consequence: “People are not content with their lot in life … They can sense that there’s something else living in their unconscious being … we’ve been brought up to deny the inner being”.

        • The uplifting chorus can mask the meaning in this song, which is about a woman who is leaving her man because she needs time to find herself. She asks him to “leave a light on” for her, meaning to wait for her return, but that’s a lot to ask. The lyric was written by Ellen Shipley, who said in a Songfacts interview: “That was very specifically a feeling that I had about people going on their own way. Even though they love someone, it’s just time for them to find themselves. It’s pretty easy. In that story, she had to go find herself in order to come back and be with this person. Oftentimes people leave because they’re not done growing up. It was more important for her to find herself first, which is my feeling in life. And if you’re in a relationship and something feels wrong, if you break it down to not the guy or not the woman but in yourself, it usually has to do with finding yourself and coming into a relationship as a full authentic person. So, I tried to do that with the lyric.

        About Belinda Carlisle

        1. Belinda Carlisle’s story is well known to some. That is the story of the ex-punk rocker, ex-cocaine addict, ex-lesbian lust icon and the ex-target of no fewer than 32 stalkers.
        2. …Belinda was a girl scout troop who got expelled after three days for placing cicadas in people’s sleeping bags
        3. …it was not until belinda turned 19, argued with duke and duke throwing all her clothes outside that belinda left home, claiming that one day she would be a star
        4. …wranglings over what the Go-Go’s stated were $1 million in unpaid royalties led to a lengthy legal dispute that finally was settled out of court, but not without leaving bitter feelings among the participants
        5. …they began to indulge a strange sense of humour. they would meet some businessman, get him drunk, take pictures of his and their private parts, and secretly place them in his pocket. ’so much the better if he was married,’ they would say
        6. …it was a case of too young and too much too soon. throw in egos and issues with royalties for song writing mixed with substance abuse and non-stop touring and you have a recipe for disaster. we simply imploded
        7. …we were getting ready for a concert in rio and it just didn’t feel right. i remember it real clearly because i started to cry. it wasn’t fun anymore. we were just sort of going through the motions, pretending to have all the fun on stage that we really did have in the beginning
        8. …i was so unhappy that i hated seeing new artists because i knew i couldn’t be one of them. i couldn’t share their freshness or excitement. i was sort of envious
        9. …it wasn’t until complete strangers wanted to kill her that made her worried. belinda had 32 stalkers, at once, after her and her husband that were considered dangerous. she began to feel like her private life was being invaded
        10. …i’m really fed up with whole media thing where you have to be 20 years old, a size 0, and blond with plastic tits

          The Nonsensical Lyrics

          • The first song that pops into most peoples’ heads when Backstreet Boys are mentioned is their biggest hit I Want It That Way. The song punctuated the success of the album Millennium, released in 1999, and was responsible for the band hitting their peak. However, a dubious fact related to this song is that the lyrics don’t make a lick of sense.
          • Many critics over the years have questioned the song’s lyrical meaning, mainly the line, “I want it that way.” Ben Westhoff dissected the song, writing that its lyrical content “makes zero sense”. For Westhoff, “Mainly, the meaning of ‘that’ is at issue.” While analyzing the lyrics, Westhoff perceived that, “None of the sentiments in the chorus seem to go with any of the other ones. Even worse, no further explanation is given for what ‘that’ is.” The critic assumed that in the song “someone simply doesn’t like it when his lover expresses preferences, never wanting to hear when his girlfriend says she wants things in particular ways”. He  also noted that “The phrase ‘I want it that way’ is similarly devoid of inherent meaning, but it’s used recurringly as a kind of conclusive phrase, always calling back to those first two lines, as the song gets gradually more despairing in nature.” He also found out that “The chorus would appear to be in direct opposition to the rest of the song.” He concluded that the song “is about a relationship that’s troubled by matters of emotional and/or physical distance, but that the singer feels strongly enough about to keep it going just the same…until the chorus, at which point he decides that it’s not worth the trouble. No, it doesn’t make sense, but it’s still stirring, beautiful in its own weird way, and undeniably unforgettable. And frankly, we wouldn’t want it any other way.”

          • I always think of the male character in the song as being someone like Andy Warhol – not necessarily a lover, but an impresario with a lot of cultural influence and self-importance, who “discovers” people and has the power to promote them to superstardom or tell everyone they’re washed up.
          • Secretly Horrifying Song Lyrics: It’s not innocent or melancholy at all; it’s vicious and angry! It turned my entire world upside down, and I’m worried that it’s going to ruin a fun, wistful pop song forever. As such, it MUST undergo a thorough, line-by-line analysis. If nothing else, this will help me pass on my disturbed feeling to you, the reader. When we’re done, I’ll give it an official rating on the Horrifying Scale and we’ll all assume the fetal position. “I picked you out, I shook you up and turned you around, turned you into someone new” Nope. He’s a dick. Five lines in, and he’s already a confirmed dick. He’s saying she was nothing before she met him, basically just a sex object, until he came along with his big savior complex and rescued her from the lesser men that make up the cocktail bar landscape. To be fair, men who go to cocktail bars to ogle the waitresses are definitely lesser in the eyes of God and Man. But wait, why was the narrator in the cocktail bar in the first place??? To pick up waitresses by promising to make them famous? New layers of creepy! It’s a “a nasty song about sexual power politics. Did you notice the part above where he seemed really, really dangerous? I don’t often use the phrase “intent on harm,” but it feels like this guy may be intent on harm.

“I dream the arrangements and vocals; the melodies tend to come of their own volition without any great effort on my part. I work instinctively, without putting anything down in writing.” – Hindi Zahra

Zahra loves to tell stories—but only about her own lived experience—in her music. She has garnered comparisons to Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, and Patti Smith. With a little bit of blues, jazz, and unorthodox folk, Zahra has arranged her entire debut album herself. Zahra will be making waves during October’s CMJ festival in New York. We caught up with the up-and-coming artist on the influence of movie music, the steps for creating songs and why she chose to sing in English for most of her album.

INTERNATIONAL INFLUENCES: It’s a mix of different music, because I was born in Morocco and we are used to listening to a lot of different kinds of music—especially to cinema and TV, because we had a lot of Egyptian films, but also Indian films and also Hollywood films. Jazz, rock, Oriental, too. It’s Africa. We have all the African music. So, I really get focused on black music coming from America, Oriental music coming from Egypt and also from south Morocco; it’s the Desert Blues, what we call the “rock of the desert.”

BEING HONORED BY COMPARISONS: The first one was Billie Holiday, but I thought that it was too much. First, because I heard a lot of Ella Fitzgerald more than Billie Holiday. Also, because the voice of Billie Holiday is tortured. It’s a voice that you can feel all of the things that she’s done to her body. So, I didn’t think we had the same voice, but I was very honored for that comparison. After the concert, people wanted to compare me to Janis Joplin, which I am so surprised about, because I don’t listen to Janis Joplin at all. And I don’t think I sound like her, but it’s the mystery of it. People hear something in my music. The most beautiful one was, I think, the “African Patti Smith.” It was when we played in London.
